August Tarpon Fishing

August Tarpon Fishing

August tarpon fishing here in Key West is usually pretty good. This year is no exception. We have had a nice solid flow of very large fish and babies that are starting to move into the back country, which is typical for this time of year starting into the fall months, we have been seeing fish over 100 pounds on the regular and many have been caught.

August can bring great flats fishing as well as backcountry fishing. Typically it’s very warm for people who are not used to the heat this year though we’ve had some pretty nice winds keeping things cooler and the water temperatures down. This can be a great ingredient for keeping around those larger tarpon that like to leave for the spawn.

I often call August September and October the slam season where an angler can get on one of my boats go out and have at least a shot at all three species that have made Key West flats, Fishing famous the Tarpon permit and the bonefish. Add that to other species that are also lurking around in the channels and on the edges of the flats that could be good table fair to make a nice lunch such as mangrove, snapper, mutton, snapper, and yellowtail snapper..

I think it’s safe to say that we are still in Tarpon season. With that we have been staying very busy here at Dream Catcher Charters. Lots of people clientele come this time of year because it’s very quiet. The island is so crowded and the fishing can be fantastic. Besides great tarpon fishing this month in August we also have some pretty impressive deep-sea fishing as well with a mahi season that has been producing larger than normal fish for the dog days of summer. A great opportunity for many of our anglers, who like to fish both inshore and offshore.

Although August, September and October are considered our slow season we stay pretty busy. The fishing is amazing so we keep our doors open for anybody that would like to get out there and take a shot at some of our great fishery in Key West. Many of our anglers this time of year book last minute and that is fine. We understand that hurricanes can definitely change travel plans so far this year. We’ve been very lucky and not been threatened by a big storm or even a small one for that matter so waiting until about 10 days before you want to come to Key West to book your fishing charter works out really well.
