Key West fishing report for backcountry fishing in September here at Dream Catcher Charters has some amazing weather. Typically this time of year we are always under the threat of an impending doom of a tropical system of some sort. September is the peak of hurricane season. This year of course it seems we’ve taken the year off without a single named storm in the Atlantic basin for the first time in a gazillion years. With our warm yet fantastic weather this year we have been unseasonably busy. Typically September is a slower time for us, but not this year. We have been getting underway on charters every single day.
September Tarpon Fishing
On our backcountry fishing charters, we have been able to get our clients consistently into some great tarpon fishing still. There are still some larger tarpon laying around in our favorite haunts along the channels and on the flats. Lately it seems the juvenile tarpon are in some new places and all of our regular haunts.
Barracudas and Sharks
Many of our clients request that we fish for sharks this time of year and the shark fishing has been pretty good. We’ve seen some large lemon sharks up on the flats and by large I mean well over 80 pounds. Shark fishing can be a hoot for family fishing trips with kids that want to pull on something bigger than they are. We can fish for sharks either on our state of the Art Bay boats for up to four people or we can use our 28 foot center console. We offer full day adventures out to the Marquesas Keys fishing where tiger sharks and big bull sharks can be part of this trip.
In those same shallow water areas where the sharks hang out, we also have some of the best barracuda fishing ever. Using mostly top water and mid levels lures on light tackles spin gear. We sight fish for barracudas in the shallows. Explosive strikes are all part of the game. Barracudas are always waiting for something to swing by that looks like food. A catching release species for us that puts up a ton of entertainment.

Flats Fishing for Bonefish
Bonefishing in Key West has improved dramatically in the last 15 years. We are seeing some fish up to 8 pounds and more in very large schools this year. Our favorite months to target bonefish are August September and October. We currently have three fishing guides that specialize in Key West bonefishing. We offer Fishing for bonefish using light tackle spin fishing gear with 10lb test or fly fishing gear. We think bonefish are without a doubt, the fastest and hardest fighting fish for their size. The boats we use are specifically built for shallow water, fish, such as the bonefish. We can take up to three people, but we prefer to take no more than two on a bonefishing charter.
Patch Reefs For Snappers
Because of the versatile boats that we use for our backcountry fishing charters, we are able to get to some nice patch reefs for the possibility of catching some lunch in the form of yellowtail snapper, mangrove snapper, mutton snappers, and the occasional legal size grouper. This adds an extra flare to our fishing charters however, we do not promise to fill the box with any more than just enough to eat for a meal.

Backcountry Fishing Forecast
All of the forecasters keep telling us we do not have a threat for a tropical system or name storm for quite some time maybe not at all this year. That said if things stay the way they are with the frequent rain that we’re getting keeps the backcountry. Water is nice and cool improving our fishing in the shallows dramatically. We can’t imagine what that looks like because it’s already pretty good. If I were planning on coming to Key West in the next two months, I would not hesitate to book a Key West backcountry fishing charter or any fishing charter for that matter. Specifically, we are looking forward to some of the best bonefishing. We’ve probably seen in a very long time.
