Key West fishing report for September usually starts off with slow due to hot days warm water. Not this year. The Key West fishing report for September this year is full of amazing weather and great fishing both inshore and offshore. Here at Dream Catcher Charters this time of year is when our crew gets time to go on our vacations. Aside from that it’s been pretty busy. Many people have wanted to go fishing and we have taken them.
In the beginning of September, we had flat calm seas with a good bit of rain moving through however, the deep sea fishing was better than usual for the month of September. We had some nice catches of mahi-mahi and the occasional wahoo. The mahi we were catching were large larger than average for this time of year in Key West ranging in sizes between 26 and 35 inches on the regular. Our deep sea fishing charter, the INXS did very well putting the meat in the box for our clients. Capt. Steven and Garret did not have to go far to be productive.
The grass is gone, so this made the reef fishing very accessible with all the ways we love to fish it. Our 36 foot yellowfin center console is the primary vehicle we use. During the new moon, we got into some sizable yellowtail snappers with a mixture of mutton, snappers, and mangrove snappers. Add that to the fact that it is still grouper season we did get the occasional red grouper on our trips out west. I will say it was hot so six hour trips were more popular.
Pro Tips: For the yellowtail snapper on top of the reef we generally use artificial lures and light spinning rods to cast for these guys in the shallower water. Generally, we can get a limit of yellowtail snappers and quite a short while.
We have been very busy this September on our backcountry fishing charters. At least one trip a day and our captains have been mostly working as flats fishing charters this time of year. They been very productive with the hunt for tarpon first thing in the morning. Then moving to the shallows for shots at bonefish and permit with a sidebar of barracuda and sharks. Lately our captains have been getting into some nice jacks and cero mackerels up in the shallows. This is a very good sign that the cooler weather is coming. Tarpon Fishing keeps going with larger fish around as well as the baby tarpon up on the typical haunts that they live in. With the King tides of the full moon this week the backcountry has been seriously flushed with fresh productive water. While the water temps never really got hot this year. It’s always nice to have that big flow.
With every Key West fishing report, we always try to do a fishing forecast. Of course the Northeast got slammed pretty good by the first Northeaster getting blasted by high winds and cooler temps. This is a direct sign to us that is going to be an early winter and may be a very active one due to the El Niño coming up. That said the long range forecast or as I call it the LRF. Is showing some changes in our weather as our area gives up summer and takes on winter. Typically a weather pattern that shows up in November for us. This week coming up it looks like we’re going to have some pretty heavy winds towards the middle to the end of the week. Then going to a fluctuating weather pattern with changing winds and some precipitation. What we call a play it by ear scenario.
The biggest changes we may see will be in our deep sea fishing patterns. The Gulfstream is about 14 miles off the reef here in Key West currently that may bring in some Palegic species, but we will be looking for the Sailfish opportunities to increase.
In the backcountry fishing and the flats fishing, we don’t expect any changes except for it being cooler and much nicer out there. A bit of wind will help shake things up I think the bone Fishing will stay good through October if not real good and the tarpon will stick around as long as it doesn’t get too cold.
On the reef fishing side of things, wind shifts and temperature changes always make it better. If nothing else, the fish might start moving in shore closer giving us great food, fish opportunities without having to go too far.
Everyone will be back on line and vacation season is over for now. We have a lot of Key West events coming up in October and early November with fantasy Fest and the World offshore racing championship so there will be plenty of people here. We have been feverishly, refreshing the fleet and expect to be done with that by the end of October. Be sure to check out the article that I wrote about our newest boat a brand new Ranger 2360 Bay boat fully equipped with everything you could ever want on a Bay boat and More.
